Marymount Manhattan consolidating after other NYC colleges close

Marymount Manhattan College announced Wednesday that it has agreed to enter Northeastern University’s global university system, pending regulatory approvals. Once the merger is complete, students in good standing will be automatically enrolled at Northeastern University—New York City. Abby Fiorella, chairwoman of MMC’s Board of Trustees, said the decision was made in light of enrollment trends and rising costs impacting higher educational institutions nationwide.

What were Marymount Manhattan College’s roots? MMC was founded in 1936 by nuns of the Roman Catholic Church. Today, the secular institution has about 1,400 students. Northeastern UniversityNew York City will continue at MMC’s campus on East 71st Street, becoming Northeastern’s fourteenth experiential learning model campus worldwide. State and federal regulatory approvals will determine the ultimate date of completion.

What other colleges have closed there recently? MMC is not the first private liberal arts college in NYC to consider the future of its institution. The King’s College, a Christian college located in the Financial District, announced in August that it would not offer courses for the Fall 2023 semester. This decision came after unsuccessful attempts at forming partnerships with other Christian universities. Alliance University, a NYC Christian college formerly known as Nyack College, lost accreditation on June 26. After evaluating their financial situation, the board of Alliance decided to halt programming for the Fall 2023 semester.
