Marine amphibious vehicle sinks

A search for seven U.S. Marines and one Navy sailor ended on Sunday, with all presumed dead. Rescuers pulled eight Marines from the water after their amphibious assault vehicle sank off the coast of San Diego on Thursday. One later died and two are in critical condition.

What were they doing? The sea tank’s crew left San Clemente Island, about 70 miles off the California coast, heading to a Navy ship for a routine military exercise. On the way, the crew, which was attached to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit based at nearby Camp Pendleton, reported the vehicle was taking on water.
