Macron claims victory in French election

Voters in France have elected a president to serve a second term for the first time in 20 years. President Emmanuel Macron beat conservative rival Marine Le Pen, who was projected to take about 42 percent of the vote. She won about 8 percent more than in her last presidential bid in 2017.

What is Macron’s platform? Speaking to thousands of supporters at the base of the Eiffel Tower on Sunday, Macron pledged to reunite the country. “I also know full well that many people tonight voted for me not to support my ideals but to block the far right,” he said.
