Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said that Monday will be a day of mourning in Georgia. The landslide happened Thursday at a Caucasus Mountains range resort in the country of Georgia near the Russian border. Garibashvili visited the area early Friday. He said that he had called in the army to help search. On Monday, a least 18 people were still missing. Helicopters and rescue dogs were also part of the search effort.
What caused the landslide? Officials say the landslide was caused by unusually heavy rains. More than 200 people were evacuated from the area. On Friday, rescue and evacuation efforts were still ongoing. The resort, called Shovi, is located in a valley about 87 miles northwest of the capital, Tbilisi. The Red Cross told French news service AFP that bridges and roads in the area were destroyed.
