Kelly takes over Trump’s White House staff
WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump swore in his new chief of staff Monday morning, handing John Kelly the reins at the White House after a tumultuous week. Kelly, formerly Trump’s Homeland Security secretary, takes over the position from Reince Priebus, who resigned Friday after only six months on the job. Priebus’ White House exit punctuated a weeklong feud between him and new White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci. Scaramucci accused Priebus of leaking sensitive information to the media and went on a profanity-laden rant to a reporter at The New Yorker. Kelly, the retired Marine general, will seek to end internal strife among White House staff and attempt to get Trump’s agenda back on track after Senate Republicans failed to pass healthcare reform last week. Despite the legislative setbacks and staffing shake-ups, Trump claimed on Twitter on Monday there is no chaos at the White House. Former Trump campaign manager Cory Lewandowski told NBC on Sunday he expects Kelly to bring leadership and order to the White House staff without trying to micromanage the president. “I say you have to let Trump be Trump. That is what has made him successful over the last 30 years,” Lewandowski said. “And anybody who thinks they’re going to change Donald Trump doesn’t know Donald Trump.”
