Kate Middleton gives cancer update
Catherine, the Princess of Wales, otherwise known as Kate Middleton, is officially in remission after nearly a year of battling an unspecified cancer, according to a Tuesday social media post. The update came as the princess visited patients at the Royal Marsden, a specialized oncology hospital in London where Kate herself received treatment.
The princess also announced her new role as a joint patron of the hospital, along with her husband William, the Prince of Wales, according to a Tuesday news release from the hospital. William has served as president of the Royal Marsden since 2007, a role previously held by his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales, according to the hospital. The Royal Marsden was founded in 1851 as the first hospital in the world dedicated to studying and treating cancer. Royal patronage highlights the hospital’s fantastic work and inspires patients and staff alike, said Chief Executive of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust Dame Cally Palmer.
What kind of cancer did Kate have? Doctors discovered cancer after an abdominal surgery in January 2024, but neither the palace nor the princess have disclosed the type. Kate publicly shared her diagnosis last March, just a month after the palace revealed that her father-in-law, King Charles III, had also been diagnosed with an unspecified cancer. The king’s doctors discovered his cancer during surgery for an enlarged prostate in January 2024.
Is King Charles in remission? Charles took a brief break after his diagnosis but returned to royal duties in April and has since continued making public appearances. To date, the palace has chosen not to disclose the type of cancer the 76-year-old was treated for, nor the treatment he has received. The palace has said his treatment will continue into 2025, according to a report by Town & Country.
