Judge blocks NYC attempt to put migrants in town hotel
A judge issued a temporary restraining order Tuesday blocking a hotel outside New York City from accepting migrants. Armoni Inn and Suites in Orangeburg is not zoned for long-term stays, State Supreme Court Judge Christie D’Alessio wrote in her order. New York City officials announced Monday they would bus about 300 asylum-seekers from their city to Rockland and Orange counties. New York City officials still plan to bus some migrants there, they said after the judge's decision.
Is New York expecting more migrants? New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency Tuesday in preparation for the end of Title 42 on Thursday. Title 42 is the pandemic-era rule that allows border officials to expel some migrants before they can seek asylum. The declaration allows New York to mobilize more members of the National Guard to boost support for asylum seekers.
