Israel-Gaza fighting marks deadly weekend

Israeli warplanes hit Gaza City with multiple airstrikes for about 10 minutes early on Monday. Air raids on Sunday killed 42 Palestinians, marking the single deadliest attack in the latest violence between Israel and the Hamas militant group. The Sunday attacks flattened three buildings, including one that housed The Associated Press, Al Jazeera, and other media outlets. Hamas also launched rockets towards civilian areas in Israel and struck a synagogue in the southern city of Ashkelon.

Any coordinated response yet? Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, told a high-level emergency meeting of the Security Council that the administration is “working tirelessly through diplomatic channels” to stop the fighting. But some Democrats called on the Biden administration to mount pressure on both sides to deescalate the violence. At least 188 Palestinians have died, including 55 children and 33 women. Gaza militants have launched more than 3,000 rockets and killed eight people in Israel, including a 5-year-old boy.
