IRS head steps down after order on sharing immigrant data

The Internal Revenue Service’s acting commissioner, Melanie Krause, planned to leave her leadership role, a treasury department spokesperson told WORLD on Wednesday. Krause became the third person to step down from the role since the beginning of the year. She began leading the IRS during a time of major changes, the IRS spokesperson said. The IRS is breaking into siloed data to boost government efficiency and domestic safety, according to the spokesperson, who wished Krause well in her next career move.

What made her leave? Her departure came after treasury officials signed a document allowing Immigration and Customs Enforcement to cross-check the names and addresses of illegal migrants in the United States against IRS records. Immigration advocacy groups sued the government over the data-sharing plan last month. U.S. District Judge Andrew Weisberg ruled Monday that the immigration groups lacked jurisdictional requirements to bring the complaint. In his ruling, Weisberg opted not to stop the data sharing as requested.
