International energy officials continue efforts to protect Ukrainian nuclear plants

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) today mobilized experts to all four of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants to reduce the risk of accidents at the facilities. The IAEA is affiliated with the United Nations and has been in ongoing negotiations with Russia and Ukraine to establish protective zones around nuclear facilities. Officials are already stationed at Europe’s largest nuclear plant in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, near the frontline of ongoing battles.

How is the international community supporting Ukraine’s access to energy? The Biden administration announced Wednesday that $125 million was allocated for electrical parts and supplies to help Ukrainian crews repair the country’s electrical system. Russian forces have targeted Ukraine’s electrical grid and other infrastructure since October.
