Impeachment of Homeland Security secretary heads to Senate

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., plans to deliver articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate next month. Johnson on Thursday wrote to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., indicating he would soon deliver articles alleging Mayorkas didn’t enforce the law and breached the public’s trust. The Senate must “hold a full trial” after the articles arrive on April 10, Johnson said, adding, “The American people deserve accountability.”

What are Mayorkas’s chances of surviving a trial in the Senate? House Republicans succeeded Feb. 15 in a 214-213 vote to impeach Mayorkas. A week earlier, he had survived a 214-216 vote. Schumer called the Feb. 15 vote a new low for House Republicans. He said they failed to provide evidence he had committed a crime, violated the constitution, or engaged in any impeachable offense.
