ICE to deport migrants who overran National Guard, says Texas governor
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Immigration and Customs Enforcement plans to start the deportation process for migrants charged with storming the U.S. southern border on March 21. The state has charged 222 people with rioting. The individuals are alleged to be part of a group that broke through razor wire along the El Paso border and overwhelmed Texas National Guards there, the governor said. After weekend bail hearings on the rioting charges, ICE is getting custody of those charged and plans to begin deportation proceedings against them, according to a social media post from Abbott.
What caused the riot? Migrants grew restless on March 21, when the National Guard began separating detainees into groups, according to a report by the New York Post. Several soldiers were injured in the rush, with at least one immigrant attempting to grab a soldier’s gun. Video of the rush shows men in gloves and winter jackets pulling down the fence while guards attempt to form a defensive line.
