House passes war powers resolution demanding that Trump end Iran conflict
The House voted 215-208 Wednesday evening to pass the resolution, which directs President Donald Trump to remove U.S. armed forces from hostilities with Iran unless Congress votes to approve the military action. The resolution bill cites the 1973 War Powers Resolution, which requires the president to consult Congress in every possible instance before the president commits U.S. troops to hostilities abroad. The vote was largely along party lines, with all of the Democrat votes being for the measure. Four Republicans also broke ranks to vote in favor of the bill. Six Republicans and one Democrat declined to vote.
Which Republicans voted for it? Members of the GOP who voted for the bill included Michigan Rep. Tom Barrett, Ohio Rep. Warren Davidson, Pennsylvania Rep. Brian K. Fitzpatrick, and Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie.
What happens next? The vote is unlikely to pass the Republican-controlled Senate, and would likely face a veto if it came to Trump's desk.
