House Republicans prepare for vote on Biden impeachment inquiry
On Thursday, the House Rules Committee released a resolution seeking to continue an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden that began under former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. If passed, the resolution would empower three House committees—those for oversight and accountability, ways and means, and the judiciary—to further investigate Biden’s involvement in his son’s international business dealings. House committees would conduct more interviews and hearings to formalize their procedural investigations. Republicans believe Biden may have used his influence as vice president under the Obama administration to unduly curry favor and receive illicit gifts.
Why is it important? Democrats have assailed the impeachment as a politically motivated attempt to discredit Biden ahead of the 2024 election. Biden on Wednesday strongly denied accusations of wrongdoing and has maintained he has not been involved in any of his son’s business. McCarthy began the inquiry without a vote by the House. If House Republicans pass the resolution, it would indicate the party is united on continuing the investigation into the president.
