House Majority Whip Steve Scalise’s condition worsens
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., who was critically wounded in a shooting last month at a GOP congressional baseball practice, returned to intensive care Wednesday night. “Congressman Steve Scalise has been readmitted to the Intensive Care Unit at MedStar Washington Hospital Center due to new concerns for infection,” MedStar wrote in a statement. “His condition is listed as serious.” MedStar added it would provide more updates Thursday. Scalise took a bullet in the hip on June 14 during a mass shooting in Alexandria, Va., while practicing with other lawmakers ahead of the annual congressional baseball game. The third-ranking House Republican suffered severe internal bleeding, and doctors said he risked “imminent death.” After multiple surgeries, MedStar transferred Scalise out of intensive care on June 22 and upgraded him to fair condition. Of the five people injured at the practice, Scalise is the only shooting victim still hospitalized. Police identified James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Illinois as the shooter. Law enforcement shot him at the scene, and Hodgkinson died from his injuries a few hours later.
