House majority whip shot during morning baseball practice

Several people suffered gunshot wounds during a congressional baseball practice Wednesday morning in Alexandria, Va. At least one bullet struck House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., in the hip. He remains in stable condition at George Washington University Hospital, and his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, according to a congressional aid. Police arrested a suspect at the scene but have not provided any information on possible motive. One member of the congressional security detail also suffered gunshot wounds during the incident. Scalise was standing at second base when the shots rang out, according to Rep. Mike Bishop, R-Mich., who called him “a sitting duck.” Scalise left a trail of blood as he crawled into the outfield, where his colleagues put pressure on the wound until medics arrived.
