House Jan. 6 committee releases report

The House’s Democratic-controlled committee on Jan. 6 released its final 814-page report Thursday, saying former President Donald Trump incited the riot at the U.S. Capitol. The report is based on interviews with more than 1,000 witnesses and lays out the panel’s investigation since the summer of 2021. It lists 11 legislative recommendations, including that Trump should be barred from future office for violating the 14th Amendment by engaging in insurrection. The report also lists several security failures, including that many in the crowd had weapons. But it says Trump was the main person at fault.

What do Republicans say? A group of congressional Republicans released its own Jan. 6 report this week. It pointed out security failures that could have prevented the riot, including an overhaul of the Intelligence and Interagency Coordination Division. It also said Democratic leadership was closely involved in security decisions leading up to Jan. 6—even to the intentional exclusion of Republicans. Posting on his social media site, Truth Social, Trump called the report “highly partisan.”
