House Homeland Security Committee marks up Mayorkas impeachment articles
The Republican-led committee on Tuesday considered two articles of impeachment against U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas. The articles allege that Mayorkas “willfully and systemically refused to comply with the law” and that his actions caused a “breach of public trust.” Republicans, including committee Chairman Mark Green of Tennessee, say that Mayorkas has failed to do his job and mishandled the influx of millions of illegal immigrants and drugs at the United States’ southern border.
What does Mayorkas have to say? The secretary has denied the charges. Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., said that Mayorkas has done his job and obeyed the policies laid out by the Biden administration. He argued that Republicans just dislike those policies, but that policy disagreements are not grounds to file articles of impeachment.
