House adopts harsh sanctions against Russia, Iran, North Korea
Lawmakers in the House passed a sweeping sanctions package against Russia, Iran, and North Korea on Tuesday with overwhelming bipartisan support. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said the measure, which passed 419-3, “tightens the screws on our most dangerous adversaries in order to keep Americans safe.” The Senate is expected to pass the legislation with a veto-proof margin, too. The bill could tie the Trump administration’s hands, barring the White House from lifting the sanctions without congressional approval. The European Union expressed concern Wednesday morning that the sanctions would negatively affect its energy supply from Russia.
