Hollywood remembers Zsa Zsa Gabor
Zsa Zsa Gabor, the flamboyant Hungarian actress and socialite who set the stage for today’s pop culture icons, died Sunday at her home in Los Angeles after suffering a heart attack. She was 99. Gabor emigrated to the United States with her two sisters and mother during World War II. She married hotel millionaire Conrad Hilton in 1942. Although she had some interesting film credits, she gained celebrity status mostly because of her wealth, her flamboyance, her constant media presence, and her seemingly endless number of marriages. She landed on the cover of Life magazine in 1951 after appearing in a television quiz show, during which she offered advice to lovelorn viewers. Her popularity with the public led to her first movie role offers. Her marital exploits—she wed eight times—played out on tabloids and fashion magazines, providing the template for today’s celebrity culture. She is survived by her last husband, Fredric von Anhalt, whom she married in 1986.
