Harris set to speak at Howard University at 4 p.m. ET

Update, 2:00 p.m.: Harris called President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday to congratulate him on his victory, according to the Associated Press. She reportedly discussed with him the importance of a peaceful transfer of power.

Original story:

Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to speak to her supporters at 4 p.m. ET, according to the White House.

As of Wednesday morning, Harris had yet to officially concede the 2024 election even as former President Donald Trump claimed victory. Trump on Wednesday morning had secured 277 electoral votes and 51% of the popular vote, according to the Associated Press. Trump gave a victory speech in Florida early Wednesday morning and thanked voters across the country.

Meanwhile, Harris canceled a planned speech to supporters at a watch party held at Howard University, her alma mater, on election night. She had been scheduled to address the crowd but her campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond early Wednesday morning told those gathered that she would not be coming.

Will Harris concede today? Richmond said Harris would address the nation Wednesday from Howard University, but did not provide details on what she is expected to say.

Has the Democratic Party acknowledged Trump’s win? Neither Harris nor President Joe Biden have publicly commented on the election results as of Wednesday morning. Minnesota Gov. and vice presidential candidate Tim Walz also had not commented on the outcome. Meanwhile, Harris campaign surrogate Mark Cuban congratulated Trump on his victory in a social media post.
