Gunman who attacked GOP lawmakers has died
Law enforcement officials have identified the man who shot at Congressional Republicans during a morning baseball practice as James T. Hodgkinson of Illinois. During a White House briefing, President Donald Trump said Hodgkinson died after being shot by law enforcement officials. Social media accounts attributed to Hodgkinson include rants against Trump and congressional Republicans. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., confirmed reports Hodgkinson worked as a volunteer on his presidential campaign and condemned his “despicable act.” The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives is examining two weapons found after the attack, although it’s not clear whether the gunman used both. Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said the gunman had “a rifle of some sort” and “a lot of ammo.” Other witnesses said the attack lasted for several minutes and included hundreds of shots. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., suffered the most serious injury, undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound in the hip. Zack Barth, a congressional aide to Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, also suffered a gunshot wound. The gunman also shot two law enforcement officials before being shot himself. Trump called for unity after the attack, saying Americans are strongest when “we work together for the common good.”
