Greek PM secures second term, majority in Parliament
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ New Democracy party on Sunday won 158 seats in the 300-seat Parliament. He was sworn into office on Monday. Mitsotakis called for a new election this month after his center-right party in May fell five seats short of being able to form a single-party majority in parliament. Eight parties crossed the 3 percent threshold to enter the Greek Parliament.
What are some of Mitsotakis’ goals while in office? The 55-year-old former bank consultant was first elected prime minister in 2019 and prioritized economic reforms. He has promised to boost revenue from the tourist industry, increase wages closer to the average for the European Union, and rebuild the nation’s credit rating. Mitsotakis took office at the end of a decadeslong debt crisis in Greece.
