Grand jury fails to indict accused D.C. sandwich thrower

A grand jury opted against indicting a former Department of Justice paralegal accused of assaulting a federal officer with a sandwich in Washington, D.C., according to reports. Officials arrested Sean Charles Dunn for allegedly throwing a sub-style sandwich at a Customs and Border Protection agent earlier this month.

Bystander footage of the incident appeared to show Dunn yelling obscenities at a group of officers on a sidewalk before he allegedly hurled a sandwich at one of the officers and ran off. Officers caught up with Dunn and arrested him, court filings showed.

The office of U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro sought a federal indictment against Dunn for felony assault of a federal officer. Anyone who touches a law enforcement officer will be prosecuted, Attorney General Pamela Bondi said after the incident. Bondi confirmed that Dunn was fired, and prosecutors sought felony charges against him. However, a grand jury rejected the felony indictment earlier this week, sources told the Associated Press.

What does this mean for Dunn? Prosecutors may not move forward with the case since a grand jury did not return an indictment. It remains unclear whether Pirro’s office planned to lodge a different indictment or pursue misdemeanor charges, which require no grand jury approval. WORLD reached out to Pirro’s office for comment and did not receive an immediate response. The 37-year-old was originally scheduled to appear in a federal courtroom next week for a preliminary hearing for the assault charges.
