GOP launches new Obama-era probes
WASHINGTON—Three Republican House committee chairmen announced new investigations Tuesday into why the Obama administration agreed to a mining company sale that gave Russia some control over U.S. uranium reserves and the Justice Department’s handling of Hillary Clinton’s email use. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., announced he would team up with the House Oversight Committee to investigate the uranium deal. “We’re not going to jump to any conclusions, but we’re going to try and get the facts,” Nunes said. The Hill reported this week the FBI had evidence in 2009 that Russian operatives used bribes and other tactics to coerce the United States into the uranium deal. The Senate Judiciary Committee already has an investigation into the 2010 sale. In a separate announcement, the House Judiciary and Oversight committees will conduct a joint investigation into the Justice Department’s 2016 Clinton email inquiry. “Decisions made by the Department of Justice in 2016 have led to a host of outstanding questions that must be answered,” the committees said in a joint statement. Part of the scope of the investigation includes an alleged memo from former FBI Director James Comey that appeared to exonerate Clinton before the FBI even interviewed her.
