G-7 promises more support for Ukraine
Western leaders are meeting this week in Germany to discuss and unveil new sanctions on Russia, tariffs on its exports, and a price cap on its oil. The group also pledged to support Ukraine “for as long as it takes.” The U.S. is expected to announce the purchase of a new, advanced surface-to-air defense system for Ukraine. Meanwhile, NATO has plans to increase the size of its rapid reaction force from about 40,000 to 300,000.
What else is going on in the war? Russia launched long-range missiles at northern and western Ukraine over the weekend, some of which struck the capital of Kyiv. It has also taken over almost all of the Donbas region and leveled an all-out assault on Lysychansk, the last city there still under Ukrainian control. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has declared this an urgent moment for Ukrainian forces.
