French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne resigns
In a statement on Monday, Borne said that she would have stayed on longer, but French President Emmanuel Macron desired her resignation. Macron is expected to reshuffle his cabinet before the upcoming June European Parliamentary elections. Her resignation comes one month after French Parliament passed controversial immigration legislation. Borne will continue in the role until a new prime minister is appointed.
Who will be her replacement? Borne’s successor has not yet been announced. In France, prime ministers are directly appointed by the president. Macron is expected to announce Borne’s replacement on Tuesday. Borne was the second woman to hold the position of prime minister and has held the position for almost two years.
