French police arrest suspect in car attack against soldiers
French security officials have arrested the chief suspect in a Wednesday morning car attack that targeted soldiers near Paris. The attacker rammed a BMW into a group of soldiers in Levallois-Perret, a Paris suburb, injuring six of them. Authorities shot and arrested the driver on the A16 highway in northern France. The soldiers belonged to the Sentinelle Operation, launched after France faced increased terror attacks in 2015. The Paris prosecutor’s office said it has opened an investigation aimed at charging the attacker for attempting to murder security officials in connection with a terrorist enterprise. Defense Minister Florence Parly condemned the attack as cowardly: “Security forces are actively seeking the perpetrator, who is on the run. The ongoing probe will determine his motives and the circumstances in which he acted.” Four days ago, Sentinelle soldiers arrested an 18-year-old man after he tried to breach security at the Eiffel Tower, wielding a knife and shouting “Allahu Akbar.”
