Former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar stabbed in federal prison
An unnamed inmate on Sunday afternoon stabbed Nassar multiple times at a Sumterville, Fla., federal prison where they were incarcerated. Nassar was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment and evaluation, according to a statement from the Federal Bureau of Prisons. He was in stable condition Monday. Officials did not say what prompted the assault. Nassar was previously assaulted in 2018 while incarcerated at a prison in Arizona.
Who is Nassar, and why is he in prison? The 59-year-old former sports physician pleaded guilty in 2017 to possessing child pornography. He also pleaded guilty in 2018 to molesting dozens of young female athletes while he worked for Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, which has trained Olympic athletes. He was sentenced to decades in prison for each of the two convictions and may never be released.
