Former Israeli leader Shimon Peres dies at age 93
Former Israeli President and Prime Minister Shimon Peres died Tuesday two weeks after suffering a major stroke. He was 93. Peres served in numerous roles in government throughout his seven-decade political career. A protégé of Israeli founding father David Ben-Gurion, Peres led the creation of the country’s nuclear arsenal in the 1950s. His foreign policy solutions often involved far-reaching compromises, which earned him criticism from his hawkish peers. His key role in the first Israeli-Palestinian peace accord earned him the Nobel Peace Prize.
