Fires spread to San Diego as Palisades blaze continues to burn
San Diego County officials reported two wildfires, the Lilac fire, and the Pala fire, together burned about 100 acres Tuesday morning, sparking about 30 minutes east of Oceanside. Dozens of civilians were ordered to evacuate as dry winds continued to blow through the region, feeding the flames. Over 200 firefighters achieved 10% containment of the Lilac fire by Tuesday afternoon but warned that the fire continued to grow at a moderate pace.
The CalFire dashboard showed that the Pala fire continued to burn with little-to-no containment, but a social media statement reported that firefighters had managed to halt its progress. Authorities also lifted evacuation orders for some areas previously thought to be threatened by the Pala blaze, despite its lack of containment. Officials closed schools due to the evacuations and warned that some roads and highways may be inaccessible due to firefighting.
Are the Los Angeles fires still burning? Tuesday marked two weeks since wildfires in the Palisades and Eaton first ignited and together burned over 35,000 acres.
Authorities contained about 60% of the Palisades fire by Tuesday morning, after it burned about 24,000 acres, according to fire officials. Nearly a dozen people died in the fire and at least four others were injured, according to a Tuesday update. The fire also destroyed about 6,300 buildings and damaged about 850 more.
Authorities reported the Eaton fire at nearly 90% containment Tuesday morning after burning just over 14,000 acres. The Eaton blaze killed at least 17 civilians and injured eight people, while destroying over 9,000 buildings and damaging over 1,000 more, according to the Tuesday morning update.
