Fight over “Dreamers” continues

WASHINGTON—Two immigrant brothers who applied this week for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program could become plaintiffs in the next lawsuit against the Trump administration over the issue. Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf announced on Tuesday his department will reject all applications to the program, which protects from deportation people, known as “Dreamers,” brought to the country illegally as children. The federal government also will shorten recipients’ renewal periods.

Can the Department of Homeland Security do that? The Supreme Court declared in June that President Donald Trump’s push to end DACA violated procedural rules. A judge earlier this month ordered the administration to accept new applications. But the White House is pushing back and said it is ready to return to court. “No aliens had a legal entitlement to receive DACA—much less a legal entitlement to a particular renewal period,” Wolf said. World Relief urged Congress on Wednesday to create a path to residency and citizenship for Dreamers.
