Female student arrested in LA middle school shooting

UPDATE: The female student accused of opening fire in a Los Angeles middle school classroom Thursday morning, injuring four classmates, could be as young as 12, according to investigators. Police have not identified the girl or confirmed her age. The victim with the most serious injuries sustained a gunshot wound to the temple. But doctors at Los Angeles County–USC Medical Center say the 15-year-old boy has a good medical prognosis. He remains in critial condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit. A 15-year-old girl shot in the wrist is “resting comfortably,” according to doctors. The gunfire also injured two other students initially thought to have abrasions. Doctors later determined grazing bullets caused their injuries. Salvador B. Castro Middle School, near the city’s downtown, has about 365 students in grades six through eight. Police have not released any information about a possible motive for the shooting.

OUR EARLIER REPORT (1:30 p.m.): Los Angeles police arrested a female middle school student Thursday after she allegedly shot two classmates at about 9 a.m. A 15-year-old boy transported to a nearby trauma center remains in critical condition, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. A 15-year-old girl is in fair condition. Police recovered the gun reportedly used in the shooting in a classroom at Salvador B. Castro Middle School, near the city’s downtown. A 30-year-old woman suffered minor injuries but was not shot.
