Federal judge sets trial date for Trump case

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon on Friday said the trial in the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump will take place in May 2024 in Florida. Jury selection will begin May 14, and the two-week trial period will follow on May 20. The trial falls during the primary and caucus season for the 2024 presidential election. Trump’s lawyers had pushed for the trial to be postponed until after the election, while the Justice Department suggested beginning this December.

What other legal battles is the former president facing? Michael Cohen, former personal lawyer to Trump, settled his lawsuit on Friday accusing the Trump Organization of failing to cover millions of dollars in legal fees he incurred while working for the former president. A grand jury in Georgia is also investigating whether Trump interfered in the 2020 presidential election, and he faces a criminal indictment in New York related to alleged hush money payments. A trial date has not been set for those charges.
