Federal judge blocks California gun law banning firearms in most public places
California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the law into place in September. It bans the carrying of guns in “sensitive places” listed in more than 20 categories, including places of worship, hospitals, and parks. The ban also applies to individuals who hold a permit to conceal carry. The law would have gone into effect on Jan. 1, but United States District Judge Cormac Carney ruled on Wednesday that the law violates the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and prior U.S. Supreme Court rulings.
Can the law still go into effect? The California Rifle and Pistol Association is suing in an effort to block the law. Carney’s ruling grants a temporary injunction, keeping the law from going into effect while the lawsuit proceeds. The outcome of the lawsuit will determine if the law is blocked long-term.
