EU leaders pledge more arms sales to Ukraine
The promise comes with a commitment to support Kyiv’s candidacy to join the EU. Leaders from Germany, France, Italy, and Romania met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Thursday and toured the city of Irpin — a site of intense fighting and heavy civilian casualties earlier in the war. There, the leaders denounced Russian tactics and praised Ukrainian forces. Prior to this visit, the four nations received criticism for maintaining contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin and not providing more weapons to Ukraine.
Will these arms turn the tide? The United States and its European allies have already supplied numerous batches of weapons that many believe played a key role in Ukraine’s defense so far. Ukraine has said it needs more weapons to drive Russia fully out of its territory. Germany and France both announced new arms shipments.
