Biden campaigns for Democrats
President Joe Biden spoke to abortion supporters Tuesday in front of a backdrop emblazoned with “Restore Roe.” The president was campaigning for Democrats running in the midterm elections. His speech focused on what would happen if Republicans controlled Congress now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that established a constitutional right to abortion. He said if Congress tried to pass a national pro-life law, he would veto it. He also touted his administration’s forgiveness of student loan debt and cutting back penalties for possessing or using marijuana.
Could this strategy work? A new poll from The New York Times and Siena College found that independent female voters are swinging toward the GOP. The poll of nearly 1,000 registered voters nationwide found that more independent women are leaning Republican by an 18-point margin. Polls also showed that even among so-called “pro-choice” voters, many are more worried about the economy than the availability of abortions.
