Double murder suspect from 2013 Indiana cold case found in ICE detention

Police say a suspect who fatally stabbed two men in southern Indiana more than a decade ago has been found in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Carlos Alberto Bonilla-Canenguez, a Salvadorian national, allegedly murdered two men he lived with in 2013 before setting the house on fire. Both men had stab wounds on at least 90% of their total body surface, Clarksville Police spokesman Cpl. Justice Kraft said Wednesday. Bonilla-Canenguez’s information was flagged in the system upon his arrest, prompting Indiana investigators to take his DNA. Bonilla-Canenguez’s DNA matched samples found on the murder weapon found at the scene and under both victims’ fingernails, Police Chief Nathan Walls said.

How did he evade police for so long? Officials identified Bonilla-Canenguez as a suspect in 2013, but never found him. Bonilla-Canenguez just disappeared after the murders, and it’s hard to track people without a Social Security number or a cell phone, especially back then, Walls said. The suspect will be extradited and face charges in Indiana, the chief added.
