Doctor: Scalise faces long recovery

Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., has a long road to recovery ahead of him, doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Friday. Scalise remains in critical condition but has shown some improvement after undergoing another surgery on his pelvis. Scalise and three others suffered gunshot wounds when a 66-year-old Illinois man attacked a Republican baseball team practice Wednesday morning in Alexandria, Va. The one bullet that struck Scalise while he stood at second base tore through his pelvis, breaking bones, injuring organs and causing severe bleeding, doctors said. Surgeries have stopped the bleeding but hundreds of bullet fragments remain in Scalise’s pelvis. Doctors do not intend to remove them all, but the Louisiana lawmaker does face future surgeries. He will stay in the hospital for “a considerable period of time,” trauma director Jack Sava said. Although he remains sedated, Scalise has responded to family members.
