Democrats skip break to push impeachment
WASHINGTON—While most lawmakers went home over the weekend for a two-week congressional recess, Democrats on House committees investigating the president stayed put. They plan to continue their impeachment inquiry into whether President Donald Trump asked the president of Ukraine for political favors and then tried to cover it up.
What will they spend their time doing? Democrats have requested documents from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and testimony from a lineup of officials, including former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, former special envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker, and intelligence Inspector General Michael Atkinson. Atkinson forwarded a whistleblower’s complaint about the matter to White House officials and Congress. Congressional committees also want the whistleblower to testify soon.
Trump maintained his innocence in a series of tweets on Monday. He reiterated he merely asked the Ukrainian president to investigate corruption. As proof, he pointed to a memorandum about the call that the White House released last week.
