Democratic candidates unite on impeachment
The leading Democratic candidates for president tackled the ongoing impeachment inquiry at their party’s fifth debate on Wednesday. Former Vice President Joe Biden, Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Bernie Sanders of Vermont, and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who top the polls, joined seven other White House hopefuls on the stage at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.
What stood out? All of the candidates said they support the House-led impeachment investigation of President Donald Trump. Biden went after the president’s foreign policy positions and argued the United States should speak out more forcefully about human rights abuses such as China’s crackdown on Uighur Muslims. The candidates all dodged a moderator’s question about whether pro-life Democrats, like recently reelected Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, still belong in the party. “I believe that abortion rights are human rights,” Warren said. “I believe they are also economic rights.”
