Government employees’ union sues over debt ceiling

National Association of Government Employees on Monday sued Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and President Joe Biden in regard to the U.S. borrowing limit. The group argues that when the United States surpasses the amount of money it can legally borrow, Yellen will have to decide which debts to pay. The lawsuit says that only Congress has the authority to make such decisions. Yellen has stated that the U.S. could start defaulting on its debt as early as June 1. Spokespeople for the White House and Treasury Department on Monday declined to comment about the lawsuit, the Associated Press reported.

Why is the union suing? NAGE represents 75,000 government employees that it says may not be paid if the government doesn’t raise the debt ceiling. Biden is scheduled to meet with congressional leaders Tuesday to discuss whether to raise the debt ceiling.
