Death toll climbs in railyard shooting

Samuel Cassidy, 57, was an employee at the public transportation facility where he opened fire on Wednesday. Officials in California have raised the death toll to 10, including the shooter, who took his own life. The identified victims are Alex Ward Fritch, 49; Paul Delacruz Megia, 42; Taptejdeep Singh, 36; Adrian Balleza, 29; Jose Dejesus Hernandez, 35; Timothy Michael Romo, 49; Michael Joseph Rudometkin, 40; Abdolvahab Alaghmandan, 63, and Lars Kepler Lane, 63.

Do we know the motive? Samuel Cassidy’s ex-wife told police that he talked about killing people at work more than a decade ago, but she didn’t believe him until now. A sheriff told The Associated Press on Thursday that the shooter fired 39 shots and appeared to target some of the victims. He carried a duffel bag holding two 9 mm handguns and 11 high-capacity magazines, according to Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith. Authorities say a locker at the facility believed to be the gunman’s contained “materials for bombs, detonator cords, the precursors to an explosive.”
