Dallas mourns slain officers as funerals begin

Thousands gathered today in Dallas to mourn three of the five police officers killed in last week’s ambush at a march protesting police shootings in Louisiana and Minnesota. The funeral services—broadcast live on local television stations—honored Dallas Area Rapid Transit officer Brent Thompson, Dallas police Sgt. Michael Smith, and Dallas police Sr. Cpl. Lorne Ahrens. Funerals for Dallas police officers Michael Krol and Patrick Zamarripa are scheduled for Friday and Saturday. The funerals follow Tuesday’s visit to Dallas by President Barack Obama, who was joined by former President George W. Bush, at a public memorial service to honor the five officers who died.
