Cruz, Rubio split Saturday GOP contests

The District of Columbia goes to Rubio, while Cruz takes Wyoming

UPDATE: Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., has won the Washington, D.C., Republican caucus, adding 10 delegates to his total. Ohio Gov. John Kasich came in second in the vote tally, taking nine delegates. Neither Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, nor Donald Trump received enough votes to get any delegates from the district.

Tonight’s victory marks Rubio’s third in this year’s presidential primaries. He now has 163 delegates for this summer’s GOP convention. Kasich has 63, Trump has 460, and Cruz has 369.

The next primaries will be held on Tuesday, when voters in Florida, Illinois, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio head to the polls.

OUR EARLIER REPORT (8:40 p.m.): Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, won nine of the 12 Wyoming Republican delegates up for grabs today. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and businessman Donald Trump each won one delegate, with one uncommitted.

Under Wyoming’s Republican Party rules, another 14 delegates will be awarded during the state’s convention on April 16. Because of the split delegate awards, no candidate can yet be declared the primary’s overall winner.

While Wyoming Republicans held their primary, Trump hosted a rally in Kansas City, Mo., his first big event since canceling a rally in Chicago last night over security concerns. Tonight, about 200 protestors chanted “Dump Trump” and “Black lives matter!,” taunting Trump supporters who lined up outside a downtown theater for a chance to attend the rally. Anti-Trump protestors have said they hope to shut down as many future campaign events as they can, after successfully blocking Friday’s rally.

More than a dozen protestors infiltrated the crowd inside the theater, interrupting Trump’s remarks about 20 minutes after he started talking. Protestors escorted out by police offered no resistance. Trump seemed to relish the opportunity to take shots at his critics as they left the theater, telling them to “go home to mommy” and asking the police to be “very gentle” with them.

“I’ve got plenty of time. ... We’re in no rush. We’re in no rush,” he said.

Trump retains a commanding lead in the Republican race for the presidential nomination with 460 delegates. Cruz has 369; Rubio has 153; and Ohio Gov. John Kasich has 54.
