Biden signs gun control legislation

The House passed the bill Friday on the heels of the Senate the night before. The law represents the most sweeping effort by Congress to curtail gun violence in decades and follows mass shootings in Buffalo, N.Y., and Uvalde, Texas, last month. “Lives will be saved,” President Joe Biden said about the bill at a Saturday signing ceremony.

What does the law do? It makes it more difficult for younger people and domestic violence offenders to obtain firearms and makes it easier for law enforcement to take away guns from potentially dangerous individuals. It lacks many more stringent regulations Democrats pushed for. The legislation allots most of its $13 billion budget for funding local mental health programs and supporting schools that have suffered from mass shootings.
