Congress calmly certifies Trump election win

U.S. Congress on Monday certified the results of November’s presidential election. The joint session took place exactly four years after riots occurred at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, following Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election. Security barriers and snow piles snaked all across Capitol grounds on Monday. Few protesters gathered near Capitol Hill barricades. The Secret Service closed some areas and announced other restrictions around the Capitol complex for Monday.

What happened at the election certification? U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday called the joint session of the House and Senate to order, according to the House’s website. Tellers from the various states announced the results of the Electoral College’s balloting process. Harris then certified the results—that President-elect Donald Trump received 312 of the Electoral College’s 538 total votes, while Harris herself received 226 votes.
