Computer glitch halts production at Toyota factories

The auto manufacturer on Tuesday said it plans to resume operations at its factories in Japan on Wednesday. A system malfunction shut down production for about a day on all 28 vehicle assembly lines at Toyota’s 14 Japanese facilities. The glitch prevented Toyota from ordering parts from any of its suppliers, according to a statement from the company. The company has not said what caused the malfunction but said it was not a cyberattack.

How will the shutdown affect the company? Toyota also has not said which models were affected by the shutdown. The Japanese factories account for about a third of the company’s global production. The company is in the process of recovering from chip shortages and product delays following the pandemic.
