Civil trial against Trump begins in Manhattan
A federal civil court in Manhattan on Tuesday selected a jury of six men and three women for a lawsuit brought against former President Donald Trump. Former advice columnist E. Jean Carroll claims Trump sexually assaulted her in the mid-1990s, but he denies the allegations. Carroll accused Trump of abuse in her memoir published in 2019 and filed her lawsuit against him last year. The trial is expected to last two weeks.
What consequences does Trump face? Carroll plans to testify in the case and is seeking an unspecified amount in monetary damages. The judge ruled to allow the testimony of two other women who allege that Trump groped them. Trump is not required to attend the trial and his lawyers said he is unlikely to appear before the court. He does not face jail time.
