Chinese leader visits Xinjiang
Xi Jinping traveled to the region where international groups say China is detaining possibly over a million Uyghurs. On the trip, which ended Friday, the leader stressed the full implementation of his Communist Party’s policies in the region to achieve security and social stability.
What’s happening in Xinjiang? The Communist Party has viciously cracked down on the region’s Uyghur and Kazakh communities. Critics have called the crackdown, which includes the rounding up of thousands in “re-education camps,” cultural genocide. Western countries have also banned the import of cotton and other products from China after receiving reports of forced labor in the region.
